About

Hello. My name is Nissa Askew and I am a professional Web Designer and Developer who specializes in WordPress installations, customizations, and templates. As a passionate hobby, I am also a visual artist who loves to create colorful, vibrant paintings and drawings.

I have always been passionate about and deeply involved art on various mediums such as painting, drawing, music, doing murals, and anything else that allowed me to exercise my creativity. My first computer presented a whole new, flexible medium that allowed endless creative possibilities. As I learned my way around the computer, I soon realized that this was an invaluable tool for my artistic production.

How I Got Into Web Design

My interests in web and graphic design all started with the idea of presenting my resume in a creative fashion that was easily accessible by potential employers buy creating an online resume. I searched the internet for HTML and CSS tutorials and fell in love with this new and challenging technology. Here I am now with seven years of design and development experience under my belt and a successful freelance Front-end developer. Chasing this dream was a decision that I do not regret in the least. I love what I do so much that it doesn’t even feel like work!

The learning never stops as technologies are always quickly changing in this industry. I always stay on top of changing web and internet technologies, latest industry standards, and design trends.

My art

I have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil. My drawings were found all over the walls, in books, on tables… my parents weren’t particularly happy about finding my kiddie scribbles everywhere but I do recall them giving in and letting me have full reign on the bathroom walls.

At the age of 8 is when it all really started for me. One day I sat for two hours as I watched a friend of the family sketch the most beautiful portrait. After closely studying her shading techniques, I thought to myself “I think I can do that”. I found a magazine photo, gathered my walkman (yes, this was back in the 80′s), pencils, and paper and spent the next few hours working my first real piece of art which turned out pretty good for an 8 year old.

From that point forward, my art became a very important outlet for me. Every school year up through high school I was enrolled in some sort of art class. That was until the reality of the real world took me by surprise and veered me on a path far away from my art.

After a ten year hiatus, I was inspired by a friend and began painting and drawing again. I haven’t looked back. Art has become my life. Luckily, I stumbled across this career path as a web designer which allows me to utilize my creativity and technology skills.

Outside of art and web design, I love to spend time in nature… far removed from the chaos and clutter of modern life when time and money permits. I live a very minimalistic lifestyle and don’t require much to be happy. Love playing the guitar and I’m not all that bad. Music is a very important staple in my life. Discovering music new music has been a lifelong hobby that never gets old to me. I am drawn to underground music or the stuff you don’t ever hear on the radio or TV…unconventional instruments and complex layers. Love to discover music from other countries as well. Can’t seem to get enough of Nina Miranda of Smoke City, Shrift and Zeep. This is my favorite musician of all time. Science fascinates me to no end with a particularly strong interest in astronomy, cosmology, and geology. It is crucial for me to have access to explore the world and universe around me as well as my own personal innerverse.
